With the new Google Meet set to enhance user experiences, the question is how it will match up against industry leader Zoom. ![]() ![]() The resulting confusion paved the way for the merger between Duo and Meet. Bafflingly, Google had also released apps like Meet, Allo, Duo, and messaging functionalities for its other applications. Hangouts was eventually discontinued in favor of Google Chat in 2021. In 2013, the tech giant launched Google Hangouts, which consolidated Google Talk, Google Voice, Google+ Messenger, and the Android SMS applications. This isn’t the first time Google merged communications apps to create unified solutions. In addition, it will be free for users like Duo. The new Meet will also integrate with other Google apps like Gmail, Messages, Assistant, and Calendar. Besides its existing features like videoconferencing and sending messages, the app will include functionalities such as in-meeting chat, scheduled meetings, customized backgrounds, real-time closed captions, and an increased number of video call participants (from 32 to 100). This means that, while Duo will cease to exist in the long run, its codebase will make up the new Meet’s infrastructure, perhaps in an effort to compete with videoconferencing leader Zoom.ĭuo users have plenty to expect in the coming weeks. In the meantime, the company is in the process of bringing over the features of Meet to Duo until it is ultimately renamed Google Meet. Google recently confirmed that it is merging Meet with Duo to create a “single video communications service.” But the merger won’t be completed until later this year.
